Here’s what we’ll be up to throughout the day on May 9. There’s more to come, and things may change, so make sure to check back frequently for updates and more information. We’ll be open for our regular hours from 10:00AM – 7:00PM.

EVENT SCHEDULE

10:00 – 11:00AM: Free donut hour! The first 24 customers to arrive on Independent Bookstore Day will get a free donut.

10:30 – 11:00AM: Story Time with It’s a Book by Lane Smith and The Book with no Pictures by B.J. Novak

11:00 – 11:45AM: Do your kids love to tell stories? We will lead the kids to work together to create their own story book. As the story is created, we will type it out, then we will print it for each child to take home a copy and illustrate themselves!

12:00 – 5:00PM: Taylor Made Wings on the Geaux food truck will be in front of the shop doling out amazing flavored chicken wings and sides, including BBQ bayou beans, tackle fries, and spinach and crab meat pasta. YUM!

1:00 – 2:00PM: Celebrity Death Match style write-off with local authors. Authors will be given a prompt and will have 30 minutes to come up with a flash fiction story. They will then read the stories aloud, and the audience will vote on their favorite. Tubby & Coo’s will donate $100 to the literary charity of the winning author’s choice.

1:15 – 1:45PM: Local authors read mean book reviews in the tradition of Jimmy Kimmel’s “Celebrities Read Mean Tweets.” Authors will read out the meanest, most rotten, horrible online reviews they’ve ever received.

2:30 – 4:30PM: We will have an open mic for customers to read their favorite poems and/or passages from their favorite books. Or read from an original work!

5:00 – 6:00PM: Wine connoisseur and owner of Pearl Wine Co. Leora Madden has helped us pair some amazing wines with some of our favorite books! We will taste the wines and discuss the books and pairings.

6:00 – 7:00PM: Cocktail hour. Join us for beer, cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres to cap off a great day and toast to indies!

ALL DAY

FOR THE KIDS: Coloring sheets, draw your favorite book on our wall, and write book reviews of your favorite books on sticky notes to stick to the books!

FOR EVERYONE: 

  • Tell us what you’re currently reading on our “What Are You Reading?” wall.
  • Write a mini review of a book on a sticky note and stick to the book.
  • FREE cupcakes and beer all day until we run out.
  • FREE Blackbird Letterpress NOLA Journal with the purchase of an exclusive IBD item and/or when you spend $25 or more.
  • Participate in our Scavenger Hunt to be entered to win $75 of gift certificates to Tubby & Coo’s, Garden District Book Shop, and Octavia Books.
